This guide was specially made to show you the most effective ways to reduce your website’s bounce rate.

Read my viral post also: 11 Things to do and become a world celebrated blogger.

Before you can fix a high bounce rate, you first need to know what is a good bounce rate? This can help you get the signal immediately your bounce rate increases.

You don’t have to be like other bloggers who don’t care whether their bounce rate is low or very high.

[Tweet “With these effective bounce rate optimization strategies, you have an edge over your competitors.”]

Although, I can’t really speak for you but one thing I’m certain of is high bounce rate could be the one reason why you’re not getting:

  1. Enough sales conversion; or
  2. Maximum traffic.

Whatever the case may be, this post will show you 8 ways to reduce your website’s bounce rate and increase both your traffic and sales conversion.

First let’s look closely at what bounce rate is.

What is bounce rate?

Bounce rate metrics
Bounce Rate Metrics High and Low Rate (Credit: ConversionXl)

There’re many definitions for bounce rate due to different case studies carried out by industry top influencers.

According to Google, bounce rate is a single page session.

In another context, Henry Obilor sees bounce rate as:

Percentage of people that lands on your page but does not communicate, interact or browse further with your page content.Henry Obilor

Based on the two definitions, bounce rate is the percentage metrics of audience that visits and bounces out of a website without any engagement whatsoever.

In another view, Amelia Willson, in 10 Reasons Your Website Can Have a High Bounce Rate, describes bounce rate as the percentage of visitors that leave your website and bounce back to your referrals such as search engines as a result of not getting what they’re looking for on your site.

According to Amelia, this is not something too serious as the term “High” is relatively used. In some cases, what is “high” to you may not be “high” to other marketers depending on your industries.

No wonder blogs tend to have bounce rates of 70-90%, content sites have about 40-60%, and service sites have only 10-30% according to Clicktale.

Another finding by RocketFuel study shows that most websites, irrespective of the industry would have bounce rates between 26% to 70%.

What is a high bounce rate

A high bounce rate is the rate at which 70% of your website visitors quit surfing your site without engaging with your content. A high bounce rate indicates either visitors don’t find your content relevant or experience some difficulties in accessing your website.

Ironically, when that happens, it means visitors just land on your website and BOOM! they are off.

Meanwhile, the following SEO issues can trigger a high bounce rate of your website:

  • If your website takes forever to load;
  • If your website is not well structured;
  • If there are conflicts between keywords and content of your website; and
  • If your website is not optimized for mobile visitors.

This implies that a high bounce rate is a symptom of bad SEO. And if you want to fix the problem permanently, you must fix those bad SEO.

What causes a high bounce rate?

It will be unfair to just give solutions to your high bounce rate, without you knowing what is causing visitors to land on your website and flee without leaving traces.

Here are some of the possible reasons for your website to have a high bounce rate.

Slow website speed

A slow loading site is likely to get a high bounce out.

It is not just a mere talk but reality as no one would stay on a page that takes forever to load.

What visitors would think is,

Why wasting my time on this website when there’re other websites talking about the same subject matter I’m looking for?”

Consequently, they bounce out…!

Irrelevant content

If your content does not offer what I’m looking for… my dwell time on your website will be quite low.

It is as simple as that…

This is one of the reasons why many content websites are having a high bounce rate. Most times, simple grammatical errors can be the reason.

Grammatical errors such as wrong use of commas, wrong spellings and bad phrases can make readers suffer from a serious headache if they don’t bounce out immediately.

Website structure

If your website design looks terrible, visitors would have bad experience and bounce back to where they’re coming from.

So, having your tabs, buttons and elements overlapped, links and CSS codes broken can be responsible for poor website outlook. And in this situation, you would hardly find an audience that would read your content.

How to check your website’s bounce rate?

Google Analytics Dashboards
Google Analytics Dashboards

Bounce rate is a percentage metric, remember? And you need an analytics tool to check it.

Google offers a tool called Google Analytics which can be used to check your website’s bounce rate.

Google Analytic is free, so you can sign up for it with your Gmail account.

It has a wide range of functions to help you succeed as a digital marketer. And these include:

  • Traffic channel for checking how you acquire traffic – the source, medium and referrals;
  • Active users to know how your active users trends over time;
  • User retention for checking how you’re able to retain users due to your website’s bounce rate;
  • Users by time of the day. This will give you metrics on the time visitors land on your site;
  • Other functions of Google Analytics include knowing the regions where your visitors come from, the kind of device they use to access your website and what pages on your website do they visit?

This is to help you monitor how your website performs its marketing functions and know what to fix if there is a bad signal from any of the metrics.

Learn more on how to link your WordPress website to Google Analytics. Once you have your account set up, play around the dashboards to familiarize yourself with the tool.

What is bounce rate optimization

Bounce rate optimization is a way of reducing your website’s bounce rate. And when you do this, you optimize your website’s traffic and conversion rate and boost your ROI.

What can bounce rate optimization help you to achieve on your website?

  1. To improve user experience;
  2. To increase user engagement rate;
  3. To make users stay longer on your site; and
  4. And reduce the chances of your visitors leaving your website for your competitors;

Ways to reduce your website’s bounce rate

If you want to optimize your website’s bounce rate, the following strategies are the most effective ways to achieve those great results as mentioned above.

Let’s do it!

Improve website speed

Website speed optimization
Website Speed

When it comes to reducing bounce rate, first thing first is to check how fast your site takes to come up.

In fact, this is the very first thing that determines whether a user will quit or not. If your site takes a few seconds to load, it is okay but if it takes 5 secs or some minutes, your site needs be optimized for a faster load-time.

The question is how do you improve your website speed?

First thing to do is to test your site performance using any of the following page speed tools:

  • GTmetrix;
  • WebPageTest;
  • Pingdom Speed Test;
  • Google PageSpeed Insights;
  • WebPageTest;
  • Dotcom-Monitor;
  • Uptrends;
  • Varvy Pagespeed Optimization; and
  • KeyCDN Website Speed Test.

After testing your website speed, then you can follow whatever recommendations you get from the tool you use to improve your website performance.

If according to the result, the speed is bad, consider the following efforts one after the other.

  • Optimize images
  • Minify css and Javascripts
  • Implement a CDN
  • Lazy load visuals
  • Opt for a good hosting company
  • Make use of cache plugins i.e. WProcket, WP fastest cache.

Improve site layout structure

Bootstrap Responsive Website Layout

Site responsiveness is another factor that determines your bounce out.

So, check if your website layout is responsive on desktop, how about mobile?

If your sites content does not appear appealing on your visitors’ desktop computers, they will quit and look for answers elsewhere…

Same applies to mobile users.

If your site is not responsive… then here is what you can do!

  1. Go online and hire a freelance web designer who can help you rebuild or customize your website. And make sure you read Pros and Cons of Hiring a Freelancer before giving out the project to anyone to avoid being scammed.
  2. Buy a new WordPress responsive theme suitable for your type of business.

Interlink topics

Interlinking Web pages
Two Interlinked Web Pages (Credit: Crunchify)

Users came in to read content, they finished… What is next?

To quit surfing is not right!

Definitely what is expected of them is to find another related topic and learn more on the subject-matter. But that won’t happen unless you package some goodies – offering another interesting and related topic in the current page.

How would you do that?

Psst… Interlinking! (silently)

Did you just say interlinking? You are so damn right.

Interlinking is a way of showcasing more articles in one piece of writing.

Fortunately, it is one of the best ways to reduce your website’s bounce rate if it is high.

How?

If you interlink different posts, there is a 70% chance that your readers are going click through to learn more about the topic you are discussing.

Interlinking done properly can boost traffic, increase conversion rate and lower bounce rate.

Make use of pop ups

Introducing Pop ups
Pup ups (Credit: SitePoint)

I hate pop ups very very much.. I really do.

And do you know why?

When bloggers misuse this tool, they make pop ups look useless.

But wait… How about if I tell you something good can come out of using a pop up?

Using pop up wisely can help lower high bounce out of a website.

How?

Think about this:

I run an online store and a user visits to buy a product. But unfortunately, the visitor feels reluctant to buy the product… And he thinks of quitting surfing round my site.

Definitely, I will get a high bounce, right?

Now,

What do you think would happen if I bring up a pop that talks about discount for a similar product?

I can say for sure I have grabbed his attention and given him a reason to surf my site once more.

And that bounce rate is saved!

Include visuals

If I mentioned visuals… What comes to your mind first?

Visuals are things that are pleasant to our eyes.

When it comes to blogging, visuals are images, videos, infographics.

Visuals help spark our interest why reading…

I can’t sit and read a whole book that has no visuals (images)… Heck, it look so boring.

Getting high bounce?

Try adding more rich visuals to your blog posts and watch if I’m wrong.

Increase font size

Is your font size bold enough?

Would you strain your eyes to read through a blog?

Never… My eyes are extremely delicate.

That is how other readers feel when your content is too hard to read.

If your regular not-clear font size is 12, try to increase it to about 15px.

Increasing your font size for better readability can be your hero to reducing the high bounce of your WordPress website.

Customize 404 pages

404 Page

You searched for a topic on a blog and you got a negative response with label 404?

404 is a terminology. It is a page that covers up for a lost page or content on a site.

Now, how can 404 pages help reduce high bounce rate?

Personalized 404 pages can be a big boost. And I will show you how!

404 pages with a search button, a home link button and a few other posts can help retain your visitors when they are lost on your site.

If someone searches through your site and it results to 404 pages, the searcher is likely going to exit right away. But with a simple search function on those pages can do the trick.

It gives him a chance to search a different term…

With that strategy, you keep the user focused once again.

Make use of table of contents

I’m usually scared of reading a long posts.

Giving me a long notes with series of test, you’re just wasting my time.

I’ll dump it… Lol!

But if you give me a book with a long write-up but has a well formatted table of contents, that is a lot better.

Table of contents helps speak loud of your writings – it gives a user an idea of what he should be expecting before reading.

Having a table of contents in your site helps bring targeted readers to read your content..

It makes every reader have a reason to read your long cooked-up stories, because they always know what to expect.

Table of contents advertises your content to genuine readers who are going to read your content. With that, you’re kicking high bounce rate ass out of your site.

Conclusion

I really hope you enjoyed my talk, the eight most effective ways to reduce your website’s bounce rate?

From the foregoing, bounce rate isn’t rocket science.

It can pop out of the blues and die out like a ghost. So, following this piece, I assure you no high bounce rate ever again on your lovely website.

Since many small businesses are yet to adopt this strategy, only a few who do have an edge over the others.

And if you could master this guide, it’s most certain you will benefit a lot from the cutting-edge technology.

What is a blog?
What is a blog Infographic (Credit: firstsiteguide)

A blog is a digital informational content created, shared and frequently updated on the internet with the use of a content management service (CMS) such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal to answer a search query.

According to Wikipedia, 59% of existing websites are blogs and WordPress powered more than 28% of them, then followed by others.

Most of the questions people ask on Google, Bing, YouTube and so on are answered on different blogs.

If a blog is about health, it must promptly address common health issues. The one that reviews and recommends products for consumers can’t be talking about products that are no more in the market.

So, for a blog to be top-notch, it must not only follow what trends, but also review and update the earlier posts in order to remain relevant to the audience.

Meanwhile, a blog can serve as a resource centre for sharing information or learning new skills, tips, tricks, subjects or how-to’s.

Such content is written in diary-style text entries, which can be updated periodically – weekly, daily or hourly to remain fresh and evergreen.

The entries can contain post title links, feature images, excerpts, related tags, author’s names and dates of publication.

When a visitor clicks on the title link or feature image, it leads to the main article or post page where he can read the full post in one piece.

How a blog works

Blogging as it was understood earlier was to have a space on the internet for creating and sharing content. With a little or no effort from bloggers, search engines would spread the content once it was published and indexed on the internet.

Before you can learn how to start a blog and make money in Nigeria, you first need to understand how a blog works.

In the recent time, a lot of things have changed in the community of bloggers.

Your blog content might not appear on Google or other search engines without some SEO efforts to optimize your content for both humans and search engines.

Meanwhile, the competition in blogging had increased.

And to lead, however, lies in the capacity of each blogger to make his content human and search engine friendly – unique, fresh, relevant, and authoritative.

Consequently, your blog will be a pervasive force to make you realize a milestone of business opportunity if you can follow the right steps.

Benefits of a blog

Here are the major benefits of having a blog in Nigeria. A good and well-functional blog can be used to facilitate the following business goals:

E-Commerce

A blog can serve as an online storefront where you can showcase and promote your business – products or services online. The strategy can be used to attract customers and sell your products without the cost of running an inventory or a warehouse.

Gateway for media attention

Your blog can easily help you to attract media attention and open opportunities in the global settings. This can make different people and industries to discover your skill, talent or ideas and prompt them to hire or partner with you.

Convinient business

At any giving time, your blog gives you the chances to target different markets, locations and customers, depending on your choice or nature of business.

This is a blessing which your traditional brick-and-mortar store can’t realize in its entire life cycle.

So, let me teach you how to grab it.

How to start a blog and make money in Nigeria

These are the best steps you can follow to create a blog successfully.

Create a strategic business plan

How to Start A Blog And Make Money In Nigeria: 7 Easy Steps 12
Six steps to create business blogging strategy (Credit: Jay Artale)

Just like every other business, you need a plan that will contain a blueprint which your blog can follow to effectively execute your business objectives online.

You can’t jump the foundation and have a structure…

You need to travel to the future of your blog based on your strength, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWORT) and put down a plan that can make you succeed in reality.

So, in addition to what is in the graphic, ensure your planning covers the following:

  1. First thing foremost is to know what kind of blog you need? There are different categories of blog, depending on your business niche. You need to decide on this before choosing a domain name and buying a theme design to ensure your domain name and theme go in line with your type of business.
  2. Know your competitors. This is not just knowing their names or brands but their strategies, tools and channels, who are their customers and how do they engage them?
  3. Know what value to introduce to the industry. This can be achieved by studying the existing products, services and information your competitors offer and think of how to serve the customers better.
  4. Choose your mentors in your industry and follow them on social media to learn what trends.
  5. Know all the resources you need, where you can get them, how much each will cost and compare prices and value to make a good deal.
  6. Brainstorm before picking a choice. Do a simple research and have the insights into all available options and pick items suitable for your business needs.
  7. Make a list of all item you decide to use.
  8. Start purchasing tools and resources one after the other.

Register Your Domain Name

A domain name is the address you want your blog to bear on the internet. This can be a word or more – phrase or name of a person or a place.

how to start a blog and make money
Properties of a Domain Name (Credit: Moz)

Examples are Google, Starcity, Startablog, Neilpatel and so on.

From an expert point of view, there are important things you need to know before registering a domain name.

When choosing a domain name, consider the following:

Use a niche keyword related name

Know Your Niche: It is strategic to know your niche at this very early stage. This will give you the idea of what type of domain name to use. You can use a term related to your niche like a blog called startablog.in or usebusinesstips.com.

The two examples carry two different niches and keywords.

The first is related to digital marketing strategy while the other is concerns startups. Thus, if your niche is health and wellness related, find a way of naming your domain around the niche or keyword.

Keep domain name simple

Having consideration for your audience at this level is very important as your domain name can have positive or negative impact on user experience. Audience don’t need to suffer before they can pronounce or spell your domain name. So, make it short, simple and sticky.

Once you know your audience, find a term that is relevant to them.

This will serve as your brand, so that your prospective audience can have a clue of what the blog is all about by mere looking at the domain name.

For example, when you hear Google, what comes to your mind is a magnifying lens.

That is why Google as a site means a search engine.Avoid using special characters like punctuation marks and symbols.

Use country TLD

Use DOT.com or the top level domain (TLD) of your country. TLD in Nigeria is NG, in India is IN and so on. Country TLD helps a lot in goe-targeting your audience.

Register all domain variations

Register all the variation of your domain name such as the .net, .us and .org, .com and redirect them to your primary domain. This will prevent hackers from taking advantage of them.

Find a Domain Registrar

When you are done with the table work above, that is when you can register your domain name. If you make a mistake in your domain name, you can’t revert except you use another name.

Host Your Domain Online

There are many available hosting companies on the internet. They all promise the best service but only a few fulfill that promise.

Because your host is the seat of your blog on the internet, you have to ensure you choose a reliable hosting company.

If your host goes down, your blog goes down. This means, your blog will be temporarily offline. As a result of this, you might lose your potential audience.

And that will have a bad implication on your reputation as well.

If you can be reading this post without having any bad user experience, then it won’t do you any harm if you host your domain by the same hosting company I use.

STARcityNg is powered by BlueHost and the experience has been great so far. So, I suggest you use BlueHost for hosting your blog.

But as a starter, you can use SiteGround either, which is cheaper.

Install WordPress

WordPress is the powerhouse of your blog which is responsible for housing all your blog content such as theme, plugins, media, and so on.

It is referred to as content management system (CMS). It serves as the pathway for your content to reach your database.

You can install WordPress on your domain using either a manual installation or automatic installation.

WordPress Manual Installation

Most experts believe manual installation will reduce the vulnerability of your database. During manual installation, you can tweak some of your WordPress files and add security salt.

This approach is believed to help you secure your WordPress files and make it hard to hack.

Get a premium WordPress theme

A WordPress theme can help you structure and organize all your blog content. This can give you the chance to brand or customize your theme to fit a desirable look, size or color without coding.

There are both free and paid WordPress themes. But experts believe paid themes will give you a professional experience.

Your decision here depends on your choice…

Free themes can be downloaded from your WordPress dashboard after installation.

But note that free themes might not serve you well as most are not good for commercial purposes. So, if you want to make money from your blog, go for a premium theme.

Essential Plugins

Plugins are essential part of your blog as they are designed to make your theme work perfectly on WordPress.

Each works differently or as an alternative to the other. Some function as a speed booster and so on.

But note that the use must be minimal to avoid slowing down your website.

If there is a certain way you want your theme to work and you don’t know how to tweak your theme to achieve that, you can find a plugin that will do that for you.

Most times, the use of plugins can help to avoid coding.

These days, most themes come with recommended plugins. If you check but can’t find what you need, visit your WordPress dashboard and download any plugin you need.
